What great additions to your place! I agree that mixing patterns can be scary, but oh so rewarding! The stool is incredible and your photos as always are gorgeous! I can't wait to see all the additions in person, can we eat on the china?

Probably the only thing I possibly love more than decor is books, and when I find one I love, I want to sleep with it under my pillow and I don't want it to be over! One of my favorites in the last year or so is The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. The protagonist is an 11 year old girl, Flavia de Luce and she is de Lightful.

I'm not sure why it took me so long, but last night I bought the second and third Flavia de Luce novels The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag and A Red Herring Without Mustard. I can't wait to dig in!

I am in love with the author Alan Bradley for so many reasons (look at that face!), but in December 2009 my colleague CDub and I wrote him to tell him how much we loved "Sweetness" and he wrote back! Check it out...

Dear Alan Bradley,

We liked The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie an awful lot.  We respectfully request that you work as quickly as possible on The Weed that Strings the Hangman’s Bag.  We are not patient souls and the wait is quite torturous.

Thank you very much,

Dear Deweese and CDub,

The Flavia de Luce Adoration Club?

Well! You've made my day!

I love it that in an oddly de Lucian way the club boasts two presidents. What a great idea - I wish I'd thought of it!

You'll be happy to know that "The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag" is in the hands of the printer. If you don't mind being tantalized, the first chapter of the book can now be read online at:

and, of course, there's always the Flavia Fan Club at:

I hope these will tide you over until "Weed" is in the stores on March 9th which, in publishing terms, is almost tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I'm hard at work on the third book, and already looking forward to taking a break in April for a US tour.

Thanks for taking such a great interest in the series. It's always lovely to hear from readers who had as much fun reading a book as I did writing it.

May the Flavia de Luce Adoration Club grow and prosper!

With best personal regards,

Alan Bradley

Dear Alan Bradley,

Those bursts of magenta, chartreuse, and aqua marine you saw on the horizon were the celebratory fireworks we set off in honor of your email! We thought those colors were suitably Flavia.

We will not take up a second more of your time, all of which we know is consumed by book numero three. Thank you for your correspondence and we sincerely hope to see you on your US book tour in the spring.

Have a really terrific holiday season, Alan Bradley!

I mean, how amazing is that! Have you read any of the Flavia novels? I think you would love them! I have to credit my dear friend CDub for writing these notes. She is clearly a brilliant writer.
