Paloma Dissent

How was your weekend? How was the baby shower? I'm sure the banner was a hit! Send photos!

Weekend in DC was great. My parents are in town, as a bunch of family has come up for the Louisville v. Georgetown game tonight. D-Double-E and B-I-Double-L got in Saturday and we had a blast. We drove to Annapolis on Saturday to see Ms. Maguire's new place, which is gorgeous. It's in the historic part of town and we walked to a terrific restaurant on Main Street. I really do love Annapolis and need to visit more often, especially in warmer weather.

On Sunday we had brunch with Lil' Q and then stopped by Crate & Barrel. I showed Jeff and my Dad the side board I've been coveting and they HATED it. HATED. Jeff asked if we were moving to a lodge. All Lil' Q offered was: "Wouldn't it be really hard to dust?" Oye. What's funny is that I noticed the pattern in several other places throughout the day. Clearly I am on-point and Jeff and Dad lack any sort of vision. Right?

So, are you with the boys on this one, or do you think I'm on to something? You can tell me the truth. I can take it. I'll have to send you a photo of the awesome skirt I got on sale at Anthro too.

Thoughts on JLaw's SAG dress?

Smiling Through Snow

Hey D,

Too funny about those L.L. Bean boots -- just two days before your post, Nick and I were searching online for some new boots and spotted those and LOVED them! I think they are perfect for you because they will keep you supah warm (they'd be too warm for me!). And I think they are pretty gorgeous. Besides, with L.L. Bean you can't go wrong. If they wear out in 15 years, take them back for a full refund!

Hunters have been the go-to boot for everyone here for a couple of winters/rainy springs (even though I had one friend report to me that her pair LEAKS!). Anyway, have you seen the inserts? I think they help with the warmth problem and allow you to wear them all year.

Not surprisingly, I have issues with the price tag of Hunters. I've realized though that a good pair of wellies is definitely money well spent no matter the price! My new favorite pair is from Lands' End. I got them for Christmas and haven't taken them off since. They have a similar leg-slimming shape to Hunters, are about half the price, and also have a lifelong return policy:

We got 19 inches of snow in central park last week and are about to get more... believe it or not, these boots are seriously keeping me excited for each snowfall. Here is the rest of my guaranteed-to-smile-through-winter uniform (NH native approved):

  • Gap Circle Scarf (in gray). Best $24.50 I've spent in a long time. Doubles as a hat, face mask and the warmest, softest scarf I've ever owned. No longer available online (hence the amateur photo below), but I bet they will have them again next year.

  • Fingerless Gloves/Mittens. Keeps fingers warm and yet still easy access to Angry Birds on the subway platform. Phew!

Mine are black, but I'd love 'em in a fun color combo like these! Found here on Etsy.

  • Really, really thick tights can be warmer than leggings for some reason. Gotta say, Hue still makes a great thick tight. I've got them in 2 different grays (shocking), BRIGHT blue, and black. The key is to go a size up for better thickness/warmth (they wont be saggy, I promise!).

(sorry about this last picture, i just had to add it. there's something about displays/photography of tights that always makes me laugh... the whole body-less legs on tip-toe just are hilarious to me)

Stay warm, bestie!

What if Anthropologie did Weddings?

What if Anthropologie did weddings? was the title of the email. Was I dreaming?  BHLDN is the new bridal line from Anthro we've been waiting for! And when I say waiting, I mean that I asked Jeff last year if we could postpone our nuptials until after the line was available. To my dismay, he declined. So here I am married, unjustly denied my longing for an Anthropologie wedding. Now, future brides will have no fear! BHLDN (still no idea what that stands for, I think it might be the trade name of the parent company?) will debut it's collection on February 14. I can't wait to devour it in jealousy!

PS... What do you think of the name? BHLDN? Do you think people will really call it that?

The Weather Outside is Frightful!

DC hasn't had nearly as much snow as NYC this year, but the storm last night reminded me that I have zero snow appropriate footwear. My devoted pair of wellies kicked it during Snowmaggeden last year. I have Uggs which are deliciously warm, but not great when it's wet outside. Every girl I see walking to work has Hunter rainboots, which I love and would work for summer rain storms too. But they don't look very warm. I'm kinda diggin' these L.L. Bean boots.

Help! I need some New Hampshire native knowledge here!

Maybe I should just stay inside in my Restoration Hardware "Foot Duvets" I call them my "swoosh-swooshes" because of the sound they make when I'm walking around the apartment.

With love and wet feet,

Story of a Weekend.

The pillow is incredible. (And yes, I just used "incredible" to describe one pillow). It's perfect for your wall color and gives your solid-colored bed some pattern and design. Its funny, I thought you'd have that concern about the differing whites. But yeah, I don't think it matters one bit. In fact, I think the mixing is cozy and "lived in". Score! A new treat for D.

How was your weekend? I barely left the apartment--I know, not my usual. Gotta say, it. was. divine. AND I got a lot done! Here's the rundown....

Nick and I scored the PERFECT dresser at Housing Works on Friday. We've been searching for an entry way dresser forever. What do you think? (prop styling is clearly not finished):

We were going to get a traditional console table -- but I figured why not get a dresser that serves the same purpose but ALSO gives us nine glorious drawers of storage? Apartment furniture should always serve at least two purposes, dont you think?

Then we painted our bedroom Benjamin Moore's Wedgewood Gray at 50%. YUM. I feel calmer in there already. Didn't take a pic, but will when the bedroom is a bit more finished.

Sunday rolled around and Nick and I ordered bagels to be delivered (seriously, I didn't leave the apartment) and I watched The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Aren't you proud of me? HOLY sistah drama. Ps-I really wish I had Kyle's hair.

Finally, I finished the banner/garland for the baby shower I'm hosting this weekend. Thanks for sharing such an easy and cute craft with me! I promise to give you lotsa credit!

Oh, and of course, I missed you!!

Anthropologie Orimono Pillow

Love your latest thrift store find. Soooo chic. I don't blame you for wearing them every day!

I did it. I finally took the plunge and bought the Orimono pillow from Anthropologie. I know what you're thinking... $88 for a decorative pillow? It's true that it's insanely expensive, but here's the deal: I've been coveting this pillow since this summer and it has never gone on sale. It has literally been in my Anthro shopping cart for a full six months. So... I starting bringing peanut butter sandwiches and leftovers for lunch and now she's mine. And I couldn't be happier. Here she is in our bedroom.

Thoughts? My only teeeeeny weeeeeny concern is that the background of the new pillow is off-white, and the rest of my bedding is super-white. Kosher?

Walk the line

Hi D,

Yeah, um, your connection to J. Lawrence is quite possibly the closest I'll ever get to knowing a real celeb so I say we run with it. What's that you say..? you were actually best friends? you taught her how to ride a bike? no big deal.

Speaking of walking the fine lines of fashion... (and I agree she does it well), I often find that I am walking the line of city boho vs. craft fair grandma frump (is there a line there? -- maybe not so fine, but a wide stripe perhaps?). Anyway, my latest thrift find has had me feeling all sorts of sass and also firmly planted on the right side of the line:

Last Wednesday with gray tights and a black dress... Saturday night with skinny blue jeans and a cream bell-sleeved turtleneck... and today with wide leg jeans and pale pink blouse tucked in. I never want to take them off.

Scored at Angel Street Thrift Shop.

Jennifer Lawrence

News Flash: We are getting old. Pink and Nelly Furtado have greatest hits albums, and a little girl I knew a very long time ago (when she was about 7) was nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe this year and is the new young ingenue of Hollywood.

That's right, not only is Jennifer Lawrence from Louisville, she's a Supa Star!

I'm LOVING what she wore to the Globes. I think it's so hard to strike the balance for her age (21), not look too old and mature (read: hussy), but not like a little girl either. I think she nailed it. I'm so excited to watch her career grow. You can check out her website here. Isn't she stunning?

A Request: kindly open a new tab in your browser, log in to, and move "Babies" to the top of your queue.

I've annoyed my whole family talking about my love for this movie nonstop. I need another outlet!
